robinCurious if they took into consideration the interaction between different types of metal? Didn't notice any sort of coating on the shaft plus the washer will make signicant contact let alone the body of the ball joint.
hmmm only time will tell i guess.

CAT-A-TONICWell right off the bat I don't like or care for those machine looking lines. Those in the boot or steel housing??
NiteProwl64Looks like the boot isn't attached for installation. The machining lines will be in every ball joint, some more noticeable than others. That's where its pressed into the control arm. If those are the lines you're talking about, they'll smoosh out so you'll know whether or not a joint was installed previously. The boot would go on after its pressed in from what it looks like. Snap ring holds the boot on, washer and nut then cotter pin. At least its greaseable!
CAT-A-TONICNightprowl64....That's one issue I don't like. Since the texture is on the steel surface, the moment you pull those through the aluminum control arm they're going to take material off the inside hole. That, IMO has the capability of enlarging the hole and possibly creating a lose fit for next time. Maybe I'm wrong, don't know.
ed monahanWhy would the shaft be that color?

What color shaft would you like to get from the Prowler Store Ed? I am sure they would shaft you in any color. LOL

They're gold plated. Therefore the price.

alrtgAs a result of this post, I went on flea bay and looked at the P.S. ad for their ball joint and the related photo's.
The first photo is of the Rare Parts version of the lower ball joint.
The second photo is of the P.S. version as posted on flea bay for comparison purposes.

Two observations:
First was that the Rare Parts Ball Joint and the P.S. version have different retainer clip designs.
After reading the post regarding the "Test Fit" of the Rare Parts where the snap ring was not installed for some unknown reason, I am wondering if MAYBE the P.S. design retainer clip might not be a better design for once?

Second was the P.S. Return Policy:

"Return Policy - Love it or return it
All parts have a 30 return window.

Part must be returned (insured) at buyers expense in new and undamaged condition.
Refund is for the price of the product(s) as the original shipping and handling cost is not refundable.
Note: Special Order Items are not refundable."

I am left somewhat confused here. Just exactly is a 30 return window? Is it 30 minutes, hours, days, month's, weeks, years, inches, feet, miles, century's?

While it appears to be our collective opinion here on POA, that the P.S. often tends to copy the design of products made by others, it appears that in this case, they actually came up with a different version of the ball joint.
The First difference was the retainer clip, the second difference is in the area where the grease fitting is. You will notice what appears to be a "Raised Nut design" on the P.S. version, and a smooth surface on the Rare Parts version.

To me, this makes it clear that the P.S. did not source their part from the same vendor. While we as a collective group, criticize the P.S. for ripping off designs and idea's for products, in this case the consumer appears to benefit by having two different design choices for a similar part. Only time will tell which seems to be the better product regardless of the price point. JMO

ed monahanAlso notice that the P S ball joint has a straight grease fitting. If in fact they did a bunch of testing they probably would have discovered that it would be impossible to attach any grease gun to it. That is easily remedied, but a glaring error. I told Rare Parts it probably wouldn't work BEFORE they shipped them but they waited for it to be confirmed. Again, I am addressing the issue of the extensive testing.

The return policy sounds great. You can change your mind if you don't like it, just don't open it or install it. After all of the other fiascos involving POA members with the P S, I would never buy anything from them. We are all adults so everyone can make their own choices.

ed monahanJust a FYI the Prowler did not come with retainer clips on the ball joints.
Tom Mills "Return Policy - Love it or return it
All parts have a 30 return window.

FYI.From feedback from our customers with PS experience good luck getting a refund from them.

CAT-A-TONICThe retainer snap ring was sent to Ed just as a "in case it was needed". IT'S NOT and won't be included. The ring shown in the pic from the PS is for the boot not the BJ itself.

All and all they're both fairly similar and compatible. I don't know if any one can say one is better or offers a better design than the other.

One thing we do know is that Rare Parts has thoroughly tested their offering against the stock BJ's and has a stem pullout rating that's twice the amount over the stock one's.

The only other issue would be the life span and durability of the boot itself. According to Glen the rubber boot material that's been used with all their BJ's has never produced the problems we've all encountered and has never been an issue in any of their applications.
